GCB Cycle 1 Evaluation

Kelly & Johnny were our first cycle GCB. Dustin was also supposed be to part of our GCB but he ended up being on a reality TV show call Tough Love 2.

Kelly & Johnny did a very good job showing us what to expect and helping us all learn about the simulation together because when we all first came in we had no idea what to expect. Kelly was the chair of the GCB but they both took on the same amount of work and did a good job making sure to answer all of our questions. I also feel as though they were relaxed enough on all of us so that we did not have to dress up each class period and did not feel like we were going to be docked points for each thing we did.

Kelly & Johnny also did a fair job of ranking. Although, I wasn't happy with my fifth place I felt as I deserved it considering the people I went up against. I can not blame Kelly and Johnny for the rating they were just trying to be fair and overall I feel that they did a good job of judging.

Information Specialist Presentation

Megan McGee

Megan was over information specialist, also known as the IS, in our simulations process. Numbers have never been my thing but I thought I understood what was going on at the beginning and soon realized I had no idea. I went through the budget thought I had it all figured out and then Megan showed me hers and I saw that I did not do it right at all. I felt as though Megan did a good job with the budget and keeping the notes but was not as organized as I would have been much bothered me a little bit. I also found myself wanting to take notes as well so that I would know what was going on but after awhile I got the impress that it was annoying Megan because that was her job.

We chose to sell 18 of the pairing package that cost us $150 to buy and we sold them for $300. We also chose to sell 6 of the extreme package that cost us $300 to buy and we sold them for $600 dollars. This way we doubled our profit with every package we sold. It was interesting to see how much money and budget stuff goes into each corporation. I can only image a large corporation like Pepsi or McDonald's and all of the different employees that they only have to have but also the inventory.

Megan talked about the problems we had in the group with the budget such as expecting less people to come to the trade fair so we had to make backup orders to sell to everyone that was in attendance. And also as I said before selling our backups before we finished selling our original packages.

She also recommended to the GCB that we are allowed more money to spend. Overall Megan received third and I thought she deserved second because she was very persuasive and did a good job showing how our Corporation of Sports and Beyond thought we could make money.

It all leads up to the TRADE FAIR

The Trade Fair!

This is the thing that is was talked up the most by all the other students who previously took this class. It is what the whole cycle leads up to as well as your final moment to showcase and sell your products. It is how you win or lose a cycle. Our trade fair was in the basement of Andrews Hall and started at 9:30am. Our corporation got there at 8am to make sure that our booth looked right. We had a tri-fold poster board that was our main attraction. Then had Gatorade with our logo down the right side. We had our brochures and my business cards(as the sales manager) sitting out in front of the poster board. Then we had a basket with trail mix and peanut butter crackers in it to entice some more customers to come to our booth. We also had receipts to give to each customer as they bought on of our packages.

Our biggest problem as a class:
Our biggest problem as a class was that the G.C.B. invited a lecture class so we received many more customers that we thought we would. The good thing about this problem was that we discussed it before it actually happen. This is when our teacher A.J. decided that we could have back up orders to sell when we sold out of all of our first products but we had to sell all of both of our packages before we could start selling our back up.

This is when our problem as a corporation came in:
Because we could only sell the back up once we sold our first products this meant that we had to sell all of our pairing package and for some reason we under estimated how many of the Extreme Package we were going to sell. It sold too fast and then we started selling the back up before we sold our original pairing packages. So then we started to push for our customers to by the pairing packages so that we would be able to sell all of them so we would not get penalized for selling some of our backup before we sold our original.

We ended up doubling our original packages that we had bought. I believe that although we did not get first at the trade fair we performed well as a team and learned how to evaluate and persuade customers.

Sales Manager Presentation

Brittney Waite(Me)

Right away I learned that I was a little intimated by selling. So I told myself that I should SELL SELL SELL so that everyone in the class would want to buy my product. I did not accomplish this as well as I wanted to because once I got up in front of the class I found my self really nervous and timid. Even though it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to I learned how to a lot about myself and how can better my presenting skills.

When trying to decide what to put in my speech about our corporation I was at a bit of a loss. I started by remember I was trying to sell my company. I feel I am good at speaking but not persuading because I do not like to be pushy. So from the beginning I felt like I was in the wrong position but I did it because no one else in my group wanted to do it. I felt as though I could suck it up and do a good job but I was wrong.

I brought in Gatorade with our logo attached to it as well as our brochure to pass around to our audience/ the other corporation members and the GCB. I also gave the GCB a packet of information which included a cover page, table of contents, our packages, our competitor prices, about the safety of our sports, our waiver and release of liability, our advertisement we put in the newspaper, and the last page has our logo and motto on it. I thought it was professional to hand the GCB a packet with all of this information.

As I got up there to speak I spoke about our packages. There were two one was a hot air balloon ride and bungee jumping and the other was a hot air balloon ride, bungee jumping, and sky diving. I didn't think there was much else to explain when I talked about the packages because they were pretty straight forward but after listening to everyone's speeches I realized I could have explained more. For example I could have talked about how they could be given as gifts, or separated and done throughout the summer, or even you do one and your friend does the other that way you only have to buy one package.

I do not like to be evaluated and this class made me really nervous for that reason alone. When I got up there are presented and then listened to everyone else I realized I did poorly. I got fifth place and I was very disappointed in myself. I also felt bad because it was a group grade and me not doing very well affected the whole corporation. We still did fine as a corporation but I left that class that day feeling very defeated like I worked hard and still didn't do well. This feeling stuck with me through the rest of the cycle because I felt as though I have let my team down. I talked to my mom and she told me to move on and fine something to look forward to with this class.

I found that but the feeling of being defeated did not help my self esteem in my speaking abilities or my participation in the rest of the cycle.

Public Relations Officer Presentation

Megan Scharf:

The public relation officer, also known as the PRO is in charge of the company's image to the public. The PRO is also to be the one who creates the advertisements as well as the history of the corporation. The advertisements include brochure, film, business cards, and fliers. Also other than advertisements they are to create the logo and the motto for their company. I thought this seemed like a lot of work for Megan to take on all by herself so I asked if there was anything I could do to help and instead of letting me help her she gave me her work to do which I was not very happy about.

With the PRO Press Conference :

Megan turned into the GCB the press release as well as an advertisement to go into the newspaper that the GCB was going to be creating.

Megan got last place when she was ranked among the other four PRO's. I felt that she got this ranking because she did not seem as excited about our company as many others did also she mumbled during her speech which made it hard to understand what she was saying.

Overall, I feel as though the PRO is given the most responsibility because not only are they supposed to portray the corporation in a positive light but they have to design effective advertisements and the logo which are vital to any corporation and their existence.

-history of corporation

Founded in 2006, Sports and Beyond (S&B) specializes in extreme sporting activities. Some of our activities include bungee jumping, hot air balloon rides and skydiving. A trained staff of about ten to fifteen people per office carefully monitors all the activities.

Sports and Beyond started in response to young adults wanting to experience exciting new activities around their campuses. The first campus, University of Illinois, took hold of the new inspired idea, and today the company has expanded to a second school, Eastern Illinois University. With continued growth and profit S&B will proceed to expand across the state of Illinois.

With being a new company, S&B is privately owned through the founders: Sarah Freund, Brittney Waite, Megan Scharf and Megan McGhee. The founders all work closely with every on-site team, and the purpose for that is to be more connected with the consumers who use the packages as well as secure the safety of the individuals. By having such adventurous activities, consumers and employees need to feel comfortable and trust those around them. Sports and Beyond offers just that, and since the company is privately owned, it isn’t subjected to the releasing of unapproved customer documentation as well as enables the company to have lower advertising costs.

Part of the reason for the continued success of S&B is the variety of packages offered to the consumers. The summer package, which was mentioned earlier sponsors hot air balloon rides, ski diving and bungee jumping. However, the success at the University of Illinois has allowed for a water extreme package, which includes canoeing/rafting, jet skiing and tubing/water skiing. Also, with our demographic mainly being college students, all the activities are constructed within a 60mile radius of the campuses.

Most of the promotional advertisements reflect off of the demographic. There are brochures, promotional videos, newspaper exerts and a web site, which is being contrasted at this time. The company is hoping to have it up within the next few months. With the use of a variety of advertising techniques, Sports and Beyond will continue to increase profits and become a successful company

If I could go back and be in another corporation instead of the GCB I would have chosen to be the Corportae Manger because I feel like they have more say in what is going on with the corportation. Also another good things about being a CM is they give their speech at the very begining of the cycle and then they are done except for the trade fair and helping others in the group. I found this position very intiging and and I feel as though I would have been better at this position then the Sale Manager that I was.

Our Group

Our Group consist of 4 people including myself
  • Me-Brittney Waite- SM
  • Sarah Freud- CM
  • Megan Scharf- PRO
  • Megan McGee-IS

We all learned our groups the next day of class after our interviews and although I would not have picked the other two girls in our group I put Sarah first as my group leader. Even though I would not have picked the other two girls I felt that we all worked decently well together. Me and Sarah knew each other before this class and I had another previous class with Megan Scharf. When we were trying to decide what our product or service was going to be we had a really hard time trying to come up with something that was original. We thought of a spring break thing and a few other but finally we came up with something for extreme sports. The problem was that Megan Scharf was not on board of what we were doing so we had to get her to be on board and believe in the product just as we did. That was our first problem of many. We all had different schedules which made it hard to meet so usually Sarah and I would meet and the two Megan's would meet which worked out because we just divide out our task that needed to be done. Another problem we had was that Megan Sharf did not participate as the PRO should by making the advertisements and brochures ect. She just assumed that it was our job to do them so we helped her but we also required her to do some of the work too. Overall our group did a good job of respecting each other and getting things accomplished but if I could go back and have another group I would.

Found this image on the Internet and I thought about my experience with group work in this class. I am not a big fan of group work in the first place because I always feel that I am doing all of the work. Communication is our major but that does not always mean that some people are good at expressing their opinions to the group. In our case, we had one person who was too opinionated and did not agree with anything the other three of us came up with. We ended up resolving the conflict of what product/service to do by compromising so that the one person disagreeing was happy with our product. Another problem we had was that Sarah and I did not trust the other two members of the group and without trust a group does not function properly. They use the word collaborative in the example above and this word to me means that we each are to do our part in the group. This is not what happen because two of us went to Walmart, two of us did the advertisements, and two of us did the poster board. As a whole we did not work well as a team.

Week 4- From other Blog

On my other blog from another class I posted a blog about week 4 of my final semester and said a little bit about each class.

So for Simulations it said, "Simulations- This class is a set up like we are playing a game. We first had to take our test over the workbook until everyone passed it which was four times. Then we followed by having interviews to decide which group we wanted to be in. I thought the interviews were really fun and did a good job of helping us get to know each other better. I just got my group yesterday and am very excited to get the game rolling." Wednesday, February 3, 2010

I found this interesting that I put I was ready to get the game rolling because it really is a game. I was also really nervous even though I did not let on that I was. I am not one to bring attention to myself and this class make you take the stage and learn to be confident in your public speaking. The "game" was fun but it also requires a lot of work which I think our whole class expected because of all the rumors/ information that previous classes have told us.

Starting Over...

As I forgot I had created this blog and why I had created it our teacher reminded us in class on Tuesday that we will have some sort of creative paper to do about ourselves and what we have learned this semester. Since I have forgotten about journaling every week for this class I am going to journal and recap what happen last semester and then begin journaling for the second cycle. I am also going to tell you a little about myself what makes me happy, what this semester has been like for me, and what I plan to do when I graduate here shortly. I am going to start with catching up on what happen in the last cycle.

We started the beginning of the semester by taking a test over the workbook we had to take the test four times until everyone passed it at the same time. I ended off last time saying I got an 83 and for the final test I got an 95% and everyone passed it because we all worked together as a team. I felt this was ridiculous at the time but now as we actually started having to do the simulation I realized how important it was to know exactly what we were doing as well as all of the rules.

Even after taking the tests and passing them I still felt so confused as to what we were going to be doing and how it was going to take place. I am a person that likes structure and although the workbook seemed as that I did not feel like I knew what to expect which makes me nervous. I think if I were to talk this class again I would ask more questions at the beginning so I wouldn't be so unsure of what to expect. I felt like we were just thrown into the class and the simulation but by just being thrown in we made up our own rules and learned how to manage as a corporation with our group.

After we were finally done taking the test then we had to pick who the group leaders also known the the interviewers were going to be. People just volunteered themselves. I did not realize that they did not have to be the Corporate manager at the time. If I would have realized this I would have been an interviewer because I would have enjoyed doing that. I was one of the interviewee and it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be. I took my resume up to the interviewers nervous and they just asked questions about what position I wanted to be and how I thought I could better their groups.

When the interviewing process was over we were asked to rank who who's group we wanted to be in just like the interviewer were asked to rank who they wanted to be in their group and our groups were then posted later that day.
